"Green Living" Plant a Tree

YourGayhusband Tip of the Day :
Breathe Deep...Plant a Tree

Weeping Cherry Tree
 Planting a Weeping Cherry Tree
Last year we had to cut down an old Oak tree in our backyard due to fire damage from our garage burning down. We looked and looked for the "right" tree for us and our needs. MyGayHusband was at Home Depot and found this tree for us...it is PERFECT.
The tree is only ornamental so no fruit which means no mess.
It will get about 20-25 feet tall and 10 feet wide. It is considered a specimen plant. This is a hybrid tree that has been graphed to ensure it's hardiness as well as resistance to insects and decease.
TIME - 2 hours
Level of Difficulty 2 on scale of 1-5
COST - $60 tree, soil, fertilizer
Dig the Hole
Dig the hole twice as wide and as deep as the pot. I layed down a large piece of burlap to put soil on. This reduces the clean up as well as mud.Make sure there are NO electrical or Gas lines before you dig.

PreSoak before Planting
Once the hole is dug, fill it with water til it fills up. Let the soil drink up !
This is a perfect Lemonade break time. This will ensure that the plant will get enough water during it's transition.

Fertilize
You will need to get some soil from the Home Depot. Mix 1/2 potting soil and 1/2 original soil that you dug out. This will give the tree more nutrients as it begins to grow. I use Scotts Potting soil as my amendment and Miracle Grow Fertilizer Spikes for trees. These are time released and should be used in Fall and Spring.

Ventilate Root Ball
Another Great tip is to make 3-4 slits in the burlap that is protecting the root ball. You will be planting the tree with the burlap still wrapping the root ball. This will allow the tree to grow properly and protect the roots until it is established. It dissolves in about 1 year.

Make it Level
Before putting the tree into the hole you will want to mix your Scotts potting soil with the soil you removed when digging the hole. This will help it adjust and not make the soil too rich. Set the tree into the hole and make any adjustments ensuring it is straight and level.

back filling with mixed amended soil
Now it is time to back fill with the soil mixture. Make sure that you take your time so there are NO air holes [they can fill with water and rot the roots]. Tamp down the soil and add 3-4" of Cedar mulch. The cedar will act as an organic insect repellent. Water the tree for at least 15 minutes to ensure thorough watering. I added decorative stones around it to keep the mulch from moving. It should bloom in a couple of weeks and add more greenery, oxygen and beauty to our yard.

What a view. I recommend finding a tree you like and PLANT IT.
Happy Gardening !

Make the Perfect BBQ Pork Ribs

Your Gay Husband Tip of the Day:
Cook it LOW and SLOW

BBQ Pork Ribs and Sweet Potato Fries
BBQ Pork Ribs and Sweet Potato Fries
You tell me what could be better than this. Once the temperature starts to elevate and you get that day of sunshine, there is nothing better than spending the day in the yard and while BBQing..
I bought these ribs on Sale for $1.19lb. This slab is about 6lbs. When cooking a slab of ribs like this it is important ton TAKE YOUR TIME and cook it LOW and SLOW. You may ask what exactly that means. You want the temperature of you BBQ to be around 200 degrees or lower for the perfect end result.

After rinsing the Ribs season them with your favorite rub. I recommend a brown sugar based rub. You really want this to marinate for 2 hours, overnight is best. Once your BBQ is at the proper heat put your ribs on a top shelf away from direct heat. I use wood chips that I have soaked in water to keep the BBQ smoking. It took about 4 hours to cook this 6lb slab of ribs. I turned it  and added more wood chips every hours.
Once it has reached 170 degrees I remove it and lightly wrap it in tin foil for at least 15 minutes. When you cut the ribs they will have a pink smoke ring. The thicker the pink ring the smokier they are. Add your favorite BBQ sauce. I recommend a brown sugar based sauce but really use what you like best. I like to sever this with Sweet Potato Fries from Ore Ida. They are really good with about a tsp of dried Thyme sprinkled on them before cooking.

Margarita
I like to serve these with Margaritas...It makes the food taste even better and your guests will never know if you made a mistake. If you do, don't sweat it...just call out... COCKTAILS anyone. Here is a great recipe for the perfect Margarita.
I hope you enjoy your BBQ and get some nice sunny weather soon.

Fashion Friday: Oscars - Who Wore What ?

YourGayHusband Tip of the Day:
Find your groove on the red carpet

Anne Hathaway in Vintage Valentino
Oscars : Who wore What ?
After watching the Oscars this past weekend, I know one thing...the Red Carpet will bring out the grove in any one.
Ann Hathaway can I just say was amazing. She could have hosted the entire event herself. She embodies so much talent.
I like that she has confidence in wearing red, and the vintage Valentino is so on trend, the attention to detail is incredible not to mention the actresses that are vying to wear them. Valentino is Hot Hot Hot !
Anne Hathaway Oscar Dresses

Ann Hathaway's Gown changes were fantastic, my favorite was the last change,a Blue Versace. She wore it perfectly with very little jewelry and no necklace. WINNER for Best stylist.

Kate Blanchet wearing Givenchy

Creative expression was great to see. Kate Blanchet wore this Givenchy without missing a beat, I appreciate her confidence.
Overall the Oscar's Red Carpet this year became more of a runway than ever before. The confidence of wearing RED on the Red Carpet, Ann Hathaway, Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Lawrence. The  feminine and sexy Mila Kunis as always led the pack wearing a  lavender lace gown. This was a knockout on her. Michelle Williams wearing a  beaded and altered Chanel gown. Simplicity at it's best...may be too simple for the red carpet.

Halle Berry, Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis
Feminine appeal was apparent on the Red Carpet.Hale Berry is so fabulous, her body
looks incredible and glowing with sexiness,Natalie Portmans gown was a perfect choice, the color is amazing on her.Mila Kunis was my personal favorite. The lace detail is sexy without being over the top.

Josh Brolin-Javier Bardem KISS

The grove was in the heart of two of my favorites Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem. It is always nice to see examples of Hollywood romance, could it be true? You Go !
In the words of the great Marvin Gaye...lets get it on.

James Franco in Drag

I got love for James Franco, although this wasn't his best performance as host, his ability to catch my attention, make me laugh is what I enjoy most about him. He is one to keep your eye on...just no more hosting the Oscars please.

Melissa Leo

Melisa Leo, found her grove in a gold lame and  white lace gown that reminded me of an evening at Nascar. Really Mellisa, after all of the award shows you have been at this season...this is what you came up with. Perfect example of what NOT to wear.
No matter who it was or what they wore, the Red Carpet has a magical ability to make each person stand on their own, a chance for self expression and creative interest. A time for each of us to identify who we are and what we like to be, its our personal grove, or personal beat that we walk to on our own magical Red Carpet.

I hope you enjoyed dishing the Fashions from the Oscars. Leave a comment and let me know who you loved/hated at the Oscars.
