I love this time of year at the grocery store.All the produce is so fresh and flavorful. The other night we just ate steamed veggies with a fresh fruit salad, it was so good. Make sure to go often and buy just as much as you will eat bfore they spoil, to prevent waste and remember that alot of over ripe fruit can be used in baking. These prices are good thru June 28th 2011.

It is so nice to have fresh flowers in your house. It feels like it brightens up your life in some little way. I like to scatter them throughout the house. This is when bud vases come in handy. One bunch can bring flowers to several rooms. Whether you buy them from a florist or at the grocery store or grow them in your yard, the are sure to brighten your life.

Live Plants

Sometimes I run across a great deal at the.99 cent store. The other day I found these planters and white Mum plants. The plants fit perfectly into the pots so I never needed to transplant them. Once their time is up I will add them to the garden and go back to the .99 cent store and spend another $3. What a great investment for your environment.

 We have been growing Sun Flowers for the last few years and are they a sight. The are so radiant they almost make you smile. This is a picture of one of the Sun Flowers we grew. Even a picture of Flowers can brighten your room. It might be a good idea to take a trip to your local park and take some pictures of nature to decorate your house with.

Yellow

I have been on this Yellow kick for the past few months. It might have something to do with the Yellow rose of TX. I like to get several different types of flowers while only using 1 color. I usually keep the same type together as well...it just depends.

Today I went to only 1 store to do most of my weekly shopping. I looked at the weekly ads to determine where to get the best deals on the items I needed as well as the best prices on nonperishable products. I SPENT $52 and SAVED $49. I would have saved more if my coffee was on sale this week. I should have stocked up when they were on sale and I wouldn't have to pay full price. Paying full price for anything makes mt skin crawl. Lesson learned. I bought a wide selection of products and shopped almost entirely from the weekly ad. Just slow down and PLAN your trip, you will be amazed on how much you will save. By the way, I went to Albertsons today. They WIN best deals of the week by far. These prices are good til June 21st.

Steamed Artichoke

Artichokes with Lemon Aioli Sauce
I love when Artichokes come into season. I remember when living in San Francisco, I would see Artichoke plants being used as decor. I didn't realize they were part of the thistle family. That is why the heart is covered with the bloom. When they bloom they are beautiful. But in this case we will be eating the beauty of Artichokes. They make such a perfect snack or even a light lunch.

Snipping off Tips

When picking an Artichoke I try to buy the biggest ones when I use them for a meal. You will nee to trim the tip of each artichoke leaf [they are sharp] and cut stem flush at the base. Remove and small leaves at the base and cut the top with a knife about 1/2 inch.

Trimmed Artichoke

Once it has been cleaned up, give it a good rinse under cold water. Using a sharp knife cut an X in the base of the stem about a 1/2 inch deep. Now steam it for 20-30 minutes until leaves remove with a little tug. Set aside. If you want it hot , serve it within 10 minutes. It can also be served room temperature or cold.

Cleaning the Artichoke Heart

Once you have made it to the Heart of the Artichoke [arguably the best part], you will need to remove the the purple thistles. It is easy but a little messy. Use a spoon and scrape it clean. If you are serving these at a dinner party make sure to have the appropriate utensils.

Lemon Aioli Sauce

For the Aioli Sauce I mixed 1/4 cup of mayo, juice of 1 lemon, salt, pepper, garlic powder and cayenne and mix. his is also a great sauce for Artichokes.

Chicken Wings

Ain't a Thing But a Chicken Wing

We were having some friends over for a pot luck so I decided to make some chicken wings. They are easy to eat when you are mixing at a party or sitting at a table, either way they are GOOD. The best way to cook wings is to deep fry them. I find they tend to fall apart or stick when baking or BBQing. Here is what I did.

COST - $10 for 6-8 people including dipping sauces

TIME - 30 minutes including cooking time

DIFFICULTY - 2 on a scale of 1-5

Washing Wings

I bought these wings for .77lb. They were fresh and not cut. The first thing to do is to wash/rinse the wings under cool water. Let them drain then dry each one off with paper towels. This will make them have a crispy skin when frying. If not there will be water in the oil and it will splatter and steam the wings. Not a good combo.

Cutting Wings

When cutting the wings into sections make sure to start with a SHARP knife. Just go between the joints and cut. This gets easier after you do the first few.  I made 40 wing sections without using the end segment. I just tossed that piece.

Seasoning Wings

I made a rub for the wings, it is super easy and really adds a burst of flavor.

1 Tbsp each of garlic and Salt and Flour

1 tsp each of pepper, onion powder, paprika

mix ingredients together and sift on the wings. Let them rest for at least 20 minutes. You can do this the night before. This is for 40 pieces.

Frying Wings

Add 4" of oil to a large stock pot and heat on medium high til it reaches 350 degrees. I did 7 at a time for 7 minutes and they turned out perfectly. You will know they are done because they will float. Let drain on paper towel and serve. I made 40 wind sections and served them with sides of sauce. It is fun to have a few so your guests can decide what they want. I put out Ranch, Buffalo, Sweet Teriyaki, and BBQ sauce.

This get together was so much fun and easy to serve. The wings were delicious and had a nice crisp skin.

Let me know how they turn out for you. Put these out with some ice cold beer and stand back as your guests devourer them. I hope you enjoy these as much as we did.

I have said it before and I will say it again...go buy some spray paint in your favorite color. In this case I used white. I like to have a majority of white with splashes of color added. I only paid $4.99 for this Budah Frog. It made me smile, and for me that is all I need to close the sale. Now every time I look at it I smile. How nice is that especially for $4.99. I had the same experience withe the 3 sided Laughing Budah Head. I only paid .99 for it. I used a $1.99 can of white spray paint and I still have enough left over for my next project.

It really helps to have a creative mind to find those Chotchkies that you can make fabulous just by giving them some love and attention. They don'y always look so great to begin with.This one was so little kid looking with funny flowers painted all over it. I saw it's beauty and new how great it could look in or house. I only paid $4.49 for this Snail.

Laughing Budah Head

See how a fabulous Chotchkie can really make you eye move from one spot to another. I like having the pyramid shade with only 2 colors and something organic. All these objects are completely different but work well together because of the color and shapes.

Ribeye Steak Dinner

Steak Dinner and Steak Salad with Leftovers
Sometimes I get a craving for a good steak, especially when it is a ribeye cooked on the grill. There is just something that the grill does to the meat. I just seasoned it with salt, pepper,garlic powder and a drizzle of Balsamic vinegar. I season it about 30 minutes; cover with foil and let come to room temperature before putting on the grill. I don't always want the whole steak and double starch dinner [as good as they are]. Sometimes I just want a good steak with fruit salad and a light cocktail. I made a 3 ingredient fruit salad using fresh red grapes, strawberries and cantaloupe.

The cocktail is 2 part mango juice and 1 part vodka with a squeeze of lime. No matter if I am alone or with others, I enjoy dining with fresh flowers. You can do it without costing much. I bought 5 stems for $4.99 at the grocery store and put them in bud vases.

Steak Salad

I always buy my meats in family packs. These steaks came 3 to pack. I will cook the extra steak to use for a Salad later in the week. A couple of days later I made this salad for us while we were gardening.
I made it with romaine lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, onions, avocados, Parmesan cheese and croutons. It is topped with a creamy peppercorn dressing and fresh cracked black pepper [ use your favorite]. See it really pays off in more than one way to buy those family packs even if it is just the 2 you.
